I wonder if any forum members can answer this question?

This Google Earth image shows Colesberg and the position of Rensburg Siding, now called Hugoslaagte.

Does this image show Vaalkop in the top left hand corner?

Is this Vaalkop?

Ian,

The Imperial Map for the Colesberg area (Intelligence Dept., Feb 1900) shows Vaalkop to the southwest of Rensburg Siding. I think the hill you are looking at is Slagters Kop. I hope this helps.

Thank you Neville.

So I’ve looked again and now think it must be this one.

Would you agree?

Could you please send me that whole map image?

Thank you

Ian,

I believe the label on the Imperial Map refers to the farm rather than to a particular feature. Helpfully, and as is often the case, parts of the farm boundary have survived and are visible on Google Earth.

The nearest prominent features to the farmstead are the two hills on, or close to, the northern boundary. The farm may well have been named after one of these.

I’ve looked again and I’m now quite sure it is the larger one you have pointed out.

Thanks again Neville
