The two days sale was quite an event, I often look at the catalogue. I bought a QSA to a CIV member at the same sale.

Well, it was held at Christie's auction house in St, James's, London, which was just next door to Spink's. At the time Christie's had bought out Spink's a few years earlier, but the actual auction was a Christie's one. I have the catalogue to prove it.

It was a most interesting few days.

I purchased a C.I.V medallion in Feb this year for £343 on EBay. It came with a case. The case however did have slight defects.

I sold a cased example of the CIV item on City Coins Sale 58 (Aug 2008). It hammered for R4400-

I agree with The Breaker that the Oct 1999 Boer War Sale was a great occasion to attend and enjoy!!!

Yes I knew Pieter very well, used to visit him when he had his small shop in North London many times, sometimes a couple of times a month. I have bought many items from him over the years, quite a few prized possessions in my collection.

In fact over the years he had several shops with his wife, one in Chelsea and the other in Islington. He was the person to whom I sold my spare CIV medallion in the late 1980's

Have lost touch the last few years, but I am rather shocked and surprised to hear that you think he may have passed away.

Hope that's not the case.

Would this be one of those catalogues?
I don't recall going to view any lots at Christie's, but, I do remember, very clearly, the kindness shown to me by all the staff at Spink, in particular, Brian Simpkin and David Erksin Hill at Spink in their King Street offices when I viewed all the lots I intended to bid on the week before their sale, which took place around the corner, in Christie's Ryder Street gallery.

I also remember having to pay Spink and not Christie's at end of both days!
