1899 - Diary of the siege of Mafeking by Edward Ross
Sunday, 7 January
About 3 o’clock this morning the enemy commenced firing Mauser bullets but soon stopped. It is presumed they saw some donkeys in the veldt and thought another attack was coming. Apart from this the sabbath (between enemies) was duly respected. On our side another day of recreation and pleasure was spent.
I took some snap shots of L.S. and B.P., also some half-plates of men killed in action buried in the cemetery.
Goodyear and Dowling out today for the first time.
Went to hospital about my ear. Doctor Hayes temporarily fixed me up.
The enemy were seen last evening bringing their 12-pounder incendiary gun down towards the brickfields, so I suppose the)' intend giving us some more fireworks tomorrow.
