I like the reference to the boxer John Sullivan (Ross calls him "John S. Sullivan") who was an Irish American credited with winning the last heavyweight world title in 1889 (fought under London Prize Ring rules); i.e., bare knuckles.
The comparison between the Boer artillery arsenal and Mafeking's reply is quite apt.
